Dental Veneers for a Better Smile

dentist cardiff answers will i ever get cavities with dental veneers Studies demonstrate that people with straight white teeth are treated better than those with stained or chipped teeth.

This is true for ALL aesthetic issues that harm the appearance of teeth.

Stained, discoloured, chipped, cracked, slightly misaligned, and oddly sized teeth can ruin your smile.

For people in this situation, Cardiff Dental offers porcelain veneers as a cosmetically restorative option. These veneers are quick, effective, and can last up to 15 years.

So, if you have any minor aesthetic problems with your teeth, dental veneers might be the best treatment for you.

Let’s look at this useful cosmetic treatment.

How Dental Veneers Can Help You Achieve a Better Smile

If you want to upgrade your smile, dental veneers are one uncomplicated option. Thin coverings that are placed over the surface (visible) part of the tooth, veneers are useful in correcting a wide range of dental issues.

Veneers are constructed of composite resin or porcelain, with porcelain veneers being recognised as more durable, lustrous, and translucent.

Dental Veneers and your Oral Health

Dental veneers can have opposite effects on your oral health, including the likelihood of getting cavities in the teeth under the veneers.

If you already have tooth decay or gum disease, you may not be a perfect candidate for veneers.

A dental veneer requires 3-30% of the natural tooth surface to be removed to receive a veneer.

Because a veneer sits over the front of the tooth (thus consuming space) and needs to stick quite firmly, the existing tooth surface must be removed to make the fit a good one.

As for cavities, tooth decay is possible in teeth with porcelain veneers.

The porcelain itself doesn’t decay, but any part of the tooth that isn’t covered by the veneer can still get a cavity.

This means that, in one way, veneers can be protective, but in another way, they can be troublesome.

If you do get a cavity in a tooth with a veneer, it is usually easy to fix, particularly if the dentist catches it early. This is just another reason we recommend regular dental visits.

There isn’t that much difference between a cavity in a natural tooth versus a cavity in a tooth with veneers.

It’s the same process. There is one small difference if decay occurs directly against the porcelain. A special bonding procedure needs to be used to bond the composite filling material to the porcelain.

The meeting at the edge of the veneer is the area most susceptible to decay.

However, in practice, we come across very little decay around veneers, which seems to be because patients with veneers seem to take better care of their teeth once they’ve seen their new, beautiful smile.

If you suffer from tooth decay after the placement of a veneer, the decay is generally easy to treat.

On newer veneers, a tooth-coloured bonding agent may be the answer, while older dental veneers may be replaced. But as with all things dental, the real answer is in prevention and not cure.

While you may have some unavoidable issues with your teeth that veneers can fix, it then becomes up to you to avoid any future dental problems that might compromise your veneers or the teeth they are placed on.
